Best Robot Vacuum for Hardwood and Carpet
Full-shot woman with robotic vacuum cleaner home.

Introduction

In modern life, people use many machines to reduce physical activity. Now science has invented many types of machines to work for us. One of them is a mostly used machine vacuum cleaner. They mainly remove dirt and dust from upholstery, carpets, velveteen furniture, hardwood floors, and many varieties of flooring, including laminated floors. In addition, they can be used to clean cars and stairs. Robot Vacuum cleaners are efficient in cleaning dust and eliminating allergens, as well as being convenient and energy-saving. Hubert Cecil Booth, who was a British engineer, invented the vacuum cleaner in 1901. However, an American inventor named David Hess received the first patent for a vacuum cleaner in 1860. He called his invention a “carpet sweeper” and powered it with a hand- crank below.

It seems there was a misunderstanding regarding the history of the vacuum cleaner. Corinne Dufour is not a recognized figure in the history of vacuum cleaner development. The widespread adoption of electric vacuum cleaners indeed came later, with companies like Hoover, which started mass production in the early 20th century, and Electrolux, which also became a prominent manufacturer. These companies added innovations like disposable bags, various attachments, and improved designs that made vacuum cleaners a household staple.

It’s fascinating how the best robot vacuum for hardwood and carpets and the evolution of floor-cleaning devices have progressed over time. Daniel Hess’s carpet sweeper in 1860 with its rotating brush and bellows was a fundamental change, followed by Ives W. McGaffe’s “Whirlwind” in 1869, featuring a belt-driven fan powered by hand. Then, John S. Thurman’s gasoline-powered cleaner in 1898, though large and horse-drawn, was innovative in its own right, even if it didn’t create a vacuum but used blowing air to clean. The ingenuity of these inventors paved the way for the modern cleaning tools we rely on today.

We will discuss several types of robot vacuum cleaner brands here. We will find out the best robot vacuum for hardwood and carpet we can use now.

Dyson 360 Vis Nav, the best robot vacuum for hardwood and carpet

On March 19, 2024, Dyson launched the 360 Vis Nav, a highly anticipated robot vacuum from the cult-favorite brand. People who love Dyson’s products have been eagerly awaiting this release for a long time. Before this, Dyson had only released one other robot vacuum in the US, the 360 Eye, in 2016, which was quickly discontinued.

The Dyson 360 Vis Nav has four parts:

  1. The vacuum cleaner itself,
  2. a docking base,
  3. a docking base panel
  4. a charger.

Assembly and setup are super easy. Just Plug the charger into the docking base, snap the panel into the back of the base, and shove the robot into its home.

You can turn on the robot vacuum in three ways:

  1. manually,
  2. via the app
  3. with voice control.

After assembly, connect the unit to Wi-Fi and the MyDyson app. The process takes only a few minutes. Once connected, the 360 Vis Nav will perform updates and the MyDyson app will indicate when the unit is fully charged and ready to clean.

I easily mapped my space and set up zones, finishing in about 30 minutes. During testing, the Dyson 360 Vis Nav performed well on rugs, under furniture, and along edges. It was able to vacuum under furniture with ease at 5 inches in height but suffered a few scrapes and scratches under lower kitchen cabinets. Nonetheless, it was able to free itself when stuck and cleaned the space well, thanks to the machine’s edge cleaner technology.

The Dyson 360 Vis Nav is a great robot vacuum with powerful suction and edge-cleaning abilities, but it comes with a hefty price tag of $1,200. If you’re a fan of Dyson products and looking for a robot vacuum, it’s worth considering. However, if you’re seeking the best value for your money, there are better options available.

Shark Matrix Robot [RV2300S, RV2310AE]

The Shark Matrix Robot is a mid-range robot vacuum that is positioned above the Shark EZ Robot Self-Empty in the brand’s lineup. It sets itself apart by incorporating a LIDAR sensor, enabling features like pin-and-go navigation and support for virtually-drawn no-go zones. It is also compatible with a self-emptying base station, reducing hands-on maintenance. However, it lacks 2-in-1 functionality, so if you want a hybrid robot vacuum/mop, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

The Shark Matrix Robot performs well on bare floors but may struggle with tile floors with deep grout lines. Its LIDAR mapping sensor provides quick and accurate mapping, but room coverage could be better. It also has several components that require regular cleaning.

The matrix feels sturdier, recharges faster while offering similar battery life, and has better debris pickup on low-pile carpeting. Its integration with the SharkClean companion app is smoother. However, the AI Ultra may be a better option for pet owners, as it handles hair better and is more effective in sealing in fine particles.

The vacuum requires regular maintenance, but most parts are easily accessible. Here are the maintenance instructions:

To remove the dustbin, press the release buttons and slide it out. It automatically dumps debris, but you can also empty it yourself.

Clean the internal dustbin filter and lint screen by hand.

The external dustbin can hold up to roughly 45 days’ worth of debris and releases easily from the base station.

Clean the base station filters with cold water every two months and let them dry for at least 24 hours.

The Shark Matrix Robot is easy to store with excellent battery performance. The SharkClean app is feature-packed, but inputs can be slow to register. Priced at only $439, it’s Shark’s best-performing robot vacuum yet.

Irobot-Roomba-combo-j9+ vacuum cleanser

We’ve been using the Irobot Roomba combo J9 vacuum cleaner (a robot vacuum cleaner) and mop for a while and we’re quite pleased with it. The mapping feature is basic, allowing only one map to be stored at a time. It outperformed other robot vacuums in pickup tests and has 100% more suction than the Roomba I-series. The J9+ excelled in picking up debris from both hard floors and carpets and performed well in deep cleaning tests. After testing it all week, we believe iRobot’s claim that the J9 is the “number one cleaning system’.i

In the box, it comes with many things, like

  1. Roomba Combo j9 Robot Vacuum & Mop
  2. Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal
  3. Extra Filter
  4. Extra Side Brush
  5. Mopping Pad
  6. Extra Dirt Disposal Bag
  7. Power cord
  8. Manual and warranty
  9. Mopping System

I was impressed with the new mopping system of the Roomba Combo j9+. It has iRobot’s Auto-Retract Mopping System, which allows the robot to vacuum and mop hard floors at the same time. When it detects carpets, it automatically raises the mop pad to prevent them from getting wet. iRobot has named this capability Dry Rug Intelligence.

The Roomba Combo j9+ excels in dealing with both dried-on and wet stains. In our tests, it outperformed other robot vacuum mop combos. Most robots we tested spread large wet stains, but the Roomba Combo j9+ handled this much better. It has a new mopping feature called Smart Scrub, which is twice as effective. We tried it with dried-on stains and were surprised at how well it worked.

Bissell SpinWave Hard Floor Expert Robot Vacuum

In 1876, Melville R. Bissell and his wife Anna were the proprietors of a small crockery shop in Michigan. Melville’s constant battle with cleaning sawdust off the shop’s carpet led him to invent a unique carpet sweeper, for which he obtained a patent. The interest shown by customers and friends in purchasing the carpet sweeper led to the birth of a new business.

Cleaning floors can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to mopping, which is known for being time-consuming. Robot mops provide a convenient solution, as the top models are capable of autonomously tackling muddy footprints, food spills, and grime from floors. If you’re in the market for the best robot vacuum for both hardwood and carpeted floors, you should consider the Bissell SpinWave 2-in-1 Robot Mop, which left a lasting impression with its cleaning performance during our hands-on testing.

The Bissell SpinWave robot cleaner stands out as an exceptional performer, excelling in both mopping and vacuuming tasks. Its powerful scrubbing action effectively tackles tough stains, and the Bissell app simplifies control and scheduling. The SpinWave’s unique design incorporates rotating microfiber mop heads that outperform traditional flat mop pads. Additionally, it comes with separate tanks for dry cleaning and mopping. Although it comes with a price tag of around $400, its exceptional performance justifies the cost. For those on a budget, the iRobot Braava Jet serves as a smaller, more affordable alternative. In our testing, the SpinWave demonstrated strong vacuuming and mopping capabilities, with the only drawbacks being occasional difficulty in navigating around obstacles and a learning curve associated with the app.

LG R9 CORDZERO ROBOTIC VACUUM

I’ve been using the LG R9 CordZero robotic vacuum for about two months now. I want to be upfront and mention that I received this vacuum as a gift. The R9 is the most advanced and effective robot vacuum I’ve ever used. It features artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning as part of LG’s ‘Deep ThinQ’ technology. With its onboard camera and laser sensor, the R9 can see objects and room layouts in 3D and map its path. It learns and adapts to your home over time. When I first started using it, the R9 seemed a bit lost for several days, but after some initial adjustments, it started working seamlessly. The R9’s cleaning power is impressive, using mini whirlwinds of air to separate dirt and dust and a five-step HEPA filtration process to ensure clean air. All the filters are washable and easy to remove.

The R9 features a Smart Inverter Motor that can increase the RPMs. Its smart turbo mode can automatically detect carpet types, walls, or high levels of dust and will ramp up the action accordingly. For instance, when in Edge to Edge mode, it aggressively spools up near skirting boards to remove dust from where the wall meets the floor. I also appreciate the fact that it has a real brush head and a belt-driven Power Drive Nozzle, which sets it apart from other robot vacuums like the Ecovacs Deebot 900. While the Deebot 900 performs excellently on hard floors, it may not match the thoroughness of the R9 on carpets.

Roborock S8 robot vacuum

The Roborock S8 robot vacuum has many benefits but also some drawbacks, including its higher-than-expected price. Robotic cleaning devices have come a long way, with improved battery life, suction power, and navigation systems, reducing the risk of falling downstairs.

Today, companies like iRobot, Shark, and Roborock lead the way in offering the best robot vacuums on the market. There’s no longer a “bad” robotic vacuum. Instead, the decision to buy one over another largely depends on features and price.

Here’s a summary of the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra:

  1. Self-cleaning, self-emptying, self-washing, self-drying, and self-refilling.
  2. 6,000Pa suction power and PreciSense LiDAR Navigation.
  3. VibraRise mopping system with a liftable brush and mop.
  4. Fast mapping and charging with off-peak charging supported.
  5. Cleaning routine customization and 3-D mapping are available in the app.

Vacuuming constantly is such a chore and makes keeping a clean home exhausting. That’s why I’m always looking for products that can handle messes and provide convenience in cleaning, like a robot vacuum.

I’ve tried many robot vacuums and can always rely on them to lighten the cleaning load. Recently, I tested the new Roborock S8 Pro Ultra and was impressed. My husband and best friend were elated as they already own Roborock vacuums!

You seem excited and nervous about making this purchase. It’s understandable given the significant price difference compared to budget robot vacuums. It’s natural to wonder if the product will live up to its promises. I hope your purchase turns out to be worth it!
